History of Duvel beer

The Duvel beer brand was created by Jan- Leonard Moortgat in 1871. The same creator was descended from a family of Belgian brewers, so he already had his knowledge in the field. In the 1970s they went through some financial problems, and Moortgat started distributing the Danish beer Tuborg.

Later, in the 80s, there was a big disagreement between the two companies that caused their relationship to end. In spite of this, the brewery was saved and the different distribution channels of Duvel beer, their main product, were kept intact.

Duvel Moortgat was already listed on the Euronext Brussels market in 1999.

Duvel Moortgat was a major investor in another New York brewery in the 1990s. The Belgian company took control of that brewery and founded an organization to manage the Ommegang and Duvel brands, among others.

In 2006, Duvel Moortgat acquired Brasserie d'Achouffe, the Belgian brewery.
