Viognier

Il vine Viognier  is originally from Rhone valley, in France, where it was introduced by Emperor Marcus Aurelius Probus, who was originally from Sirmium (Sremska Mitrovica) in Serbia, so it is possible that its origins are Balkan. Long forgotten, also because of the low productivity, the Viognier it has then returned to the fore in recent times, being at the base of the whites of Condrieu (Rhone valley), wines that are difficult to find and characterized by acidity contained and remarkable olfactory intensity. To confirm its origins, we find it also cultivated on the island of Quick View (Dalmatia) under the name of Vugava o Bugava. In Italy the Viognier it is spreading especially in the regions a hot weather (Tuscany., Emilia Romagna, Umbria, Latium) where it is generally blended with other grapes. Where vinified in purity, it is able to express at times absolutely noteworthy results.

From the ampelographic point of view, the Viognier has small or medium leaves, orbicolare, pentalobata. Its cluster is medium-small, truncated cone, simple or winged, sometimes compact. The grape is small, spheroidal or slightly oval, with a thick skin of colore amber yellow. The wine obtained from Viognier vinified in purity has unique characteristics, since it seems to combine the structure of the best Chardonnay to the freshness of Sauvignon and to the nose it offers tropical notes worthy of a Gewurztraminer. It manages to release all this aromatic sumptuousness only if brought to maturity ideal, but considering that it is slightly late, there is a risk that with over-ripening the freshness may give way sugar and then to alcohol.
